Why Generation 120?

May 10, 2018

Like you I wear many hats.  I am a community member.  I’m a member of a local church.  I am an employee.  I am a husband.  I am a volunteer.  In life one is forced to wear many hats.  I am no exception to that, but one of the most important roles I will ever have is that of father.  Being a father is a blessing from God and one that we should all take very seriously.  Like you I love my children and I want them to grow up to be successful in all areas of their life.  This includes their faith.

While all generations have no doubt encountered challenges to their faith in God and the bible, there has never been a more challenging time than what our children are facing now. The bible is being referenced as a history book or worse a book of fairy tales.  The theory of evolution is no longer being taught as a theory but as if it were fact.  Evolutionary references are everywhere and our children are the targets.  Start paying attention to children’s books, movies, and TV shows.  You will see evolutionary ideas and references being presented constantly. You can’t even open a book about dinosaurs without a reference to “billions of years before man existed” or something to that effect, usually on the first page.  All kids love dinosaurs, rocks, volcanoes, and such and these things are being used to turn our children away from God. In my opinion this is the first major stumbling block to the Christian faith that many children face and when placed that early in life can lead to many other doubts.

Growing up and in fact until the recent years of my life there were things that seemed inconsistent with the bible to me.  The age of he earth is an example of this.  I always chalked it up to “I’m not sure how God did it, but I trust that He did”.  It didn’t really challenge my faith.  I was ok with not knowing.  This next generation however, will not be ok with not knowing.  Think about it.  If you are in your 30-40 years old or older you probably remember a time when if you wanted information about something you had to find an encyclopedia set.  That usually meant a trip to the library.  Even then the information available was limited.  Now information is literally seconds away from multiple devices in our homes and schools via the Internet.  Kids growing up now can find more information on a topic in minutes than weeks or even months of research would have produced a generation or so ago.  They are not and will not be ok with not knowing something.  They want answers. They need answers.

Romans 1:20 tells us: “For since the creation of this world His invisible attributes, His eternal power, His divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made so that they are without excuse.”  That is right we are without excuse.  We can’t give in to the pressures of the world.  It is not too hard!  God is clearly seen in what he has made. The bible paints an accurate picture of history and creation. The theory of evolution is just a theory and a bad one at that.  It is full of holes. When viewed correctly the current science we have actually supports what the bible tells us.   We can keep our children on track!  The information the world will throw at them does not have to be a challenge to their faith.  All we have to do is present the right information to our children in a consistent and creative way.

We will never offset the evolutionary bombardment in our culture with a casual or occasional approach.  We have to be creative.  We have to be consistent. We have to fight fire with fire.  That is why Generation 120 was formed.  The goal is to help to equip parents and teachers with tools and resources to train up this next generation.  A generation that will recognize God as creator of all and that will seek to honor him in all things.  That’s Generation120!!
